What to Know About Diesel Exhaust Fluid

What Is DEF & Why Do You Need It?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is an emission control agent designed to neutralize harmful emissions.

  • Used to reduce pollution from diesel vehicles and equipment.
  • Manufacturers of diesel engines are required by the EPA to prevent startup if the Diesel Exhaust Fluid runs out—ensuring operators adhere to clean-air regulations.
  • DEF is non-toxic, non-polluting, non-hazardous, and non-flammable.

What Equipment Requires DEF?

For proper functioning, Diesel Exhaust Fluid must be used with any engine utilizing Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.

Nowadays, the vast majority of engine manufacturers utilize SCR technology, meaning DEF is a necessity with all Tier 4 Final engines. Without the proper DEF levels, the engine will stop working.

DEF is necessary to operate Tier 4 Final equipment and vehicles like:
  • Backhoes
  • Bulldozers
  • Cranes
  • Other Heavy Equipment
  • Commercial Vehicles
  • Generators
  • Hi-Reach/Aerial Platform Lifts
  • Air Compressors
