Know the Difference
Clear Diesel vs Dyed Diesel vs DEF
On-Road ‘Clear’ Diesel
On-Road Diesel—also known as ‘Clear Diesel’ or Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD)—is a standard vehicle-grade fuel used to fuel all types of highway vehicles:
- Cars
- Trucks
- Rigs
Unlike Dyed Diesel, Clear Diesel is taxed, and, therefore, costs more per gallon. Highway vehicles, as opposed to construction vehicles, are required by the IRS to use Clear Diesel only.
Off-Road ‘Dyed’ Diesel
Off-Road Diesel—or ‘Dyed Diesel’, Red Diesel, or Marked Diesel—is the same as On-Road Diesel, except it’s tax-free and only intended for use in off-road equipment.
- Generators
- Tractors
- Bulldozers & Excavators
- Backhoes & Forklifts
- Cranes
- Skid Steers & Reefer Trailers
- Other standard heavy equipment
DEF
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), combined with Selective Catalytic Reduction technology,
- Used to reduce pollution from diesel vehicles and equipment.
- Manufacturers of diesel engines are required by the EPA to prevent startup if the Diesel Exhaust Fluid runs out—ensuring operators adhere to clean-air regulations.
How DEF Regulations Affect Your Business
- Without the required DEF levels your equipment will cease to function until refilled.
- Allowing DEF levels to dip too low could void the warranties for your equipment.
